American scientists have developed a brand new process for transferring data through the human body.
Using the human body instead of Bluetooth to communicate data to electronic devices, it may soon be possible.
Behind this idea worthy of the greatest science fiction films hides the work of a whole team of scientists from theUniversity of San Diego in California (United States). As more and more objects around us are connected, researchers believe that using the human body to communicate is a viable idea, especially since this technique does not require a lot of energy.
The use of magnetic resonance
How does it work? Quite simply, magnetic resonance, which easily passes through the tissues of the human body, is here used to send data to portable devices. What is for the moment only a prototype sends the signals by thin bracelets installed on the forearms. At one end is a receiver-analyzer of these data. These bracelets act as an inductor and serve as guides to the magnetic fields in the human body. So far, several tests have proven to be convincing, as the data has been transferred from arm to arm, leg to leg and even through the head.
This process, if it is in an embryonic stage, could very well in the not-so-distant future be used to connect vital signs sensors and devices (connected watch, tablet) to keep up-to-date. any time of a person’s state of health.
“In the future, people will carry more and more electronic equipment, such as smartwatches. These devices will have to communicate with each other, ”explains Dr Patrick Mercier, one of the main instigators of this work.
A less greedy and more secure process
Another advantage, these devices will not need a battery because they consume very little power. “The problem with portable devices like smartwatches is that they have a low battery life because they use small batteries,” explains Jiwoong Park, a doctoral student who is part of the research team. “We hope to significantly reduce consumption as well as the frequency of recharging devices,” he concludes.
The icing on the cake, this process would also be much more secure than the Bluetooth traditionally used. Indeed, the radius of the latter can be heard up to 10 meters around the central point. Here, the bodily communication network cannot be communicated to anyone else.
