2.5 points. It is the reduction in smoking observed since the application in 2005 of the global plan that tobacco control in the world according to a study published in the journal The Lancet Public Health. Smoking rates in the 126 countries studied fell from 24.7% in 2005 to 22.2% in 2015. The report takes stock of the treaty, called the Framework Convention of the World Health Organization (WHO) for tobacco control, for which 180 countries have pledged to put in place measures to combat the scourge of smoking.
The results are rather mixed in view of the figures which show a quite relative impact of the device: it has led to a decrease in tobacco use in 90 countries. In contrast, an increase in smoking was observed in 24 countries and in 12 others the smoking rate did not change.
The anti-smoking plan includes five main projects more or less implemented in the countries, namely: public spaces without tobacco, warnings on cigarette packages, high tobacco taxes, full advertising bans and support forhelps to quit smoking.
The poorly followed tobacco advertising ban
While the ban on smoking in public places is relatively well enforced, the ban on advertising is still lacking in many countries. Only 16 out of 126 countries in the world have implemented this latest ban.
The most effective measure to reduce smoking concerns the high taxation of tobacco products according to the study: a fifth of countries have followed this provision, according to the study taken up by AFP.
