After E-cigarette, the “electronic seal”? A vape based on cannabis extract is launched this Tuesday. This product “offers the benefits of cannabinoids without psychotropic effect thanks to the extraction of molecules from hemp without THC”, states the Franco-Czech company KanaVape, which markets it. The precision “without THC” is important for the manufacturers, because it would be the origin of the marketing authorization. THC is a cannabinoid that provides euphoric, psychotic and recreational effects, the company says. The KanaVape is THC-free and therefore would be harmless.
Entrepreneurs go further, going so far as to extol the alleged therapeutic virtues of their vapers. Their assurance comes from the composition of CBD, cannabidiol. This other “cannabinoid” molecule is a non-psychoactive component of the plant that does not induce the usual intoxication of cannabis. CBD can be used therapeutically to relieve seizures, inflammation, anxiety, and nausea, among others. Some studies suggest its effectiveness in the treatment of schizophrenia.
In summary, the CBD-based vaping machine would only want “good” for its consumers, according to its designers. In Vice magazine, Antonin Cohen, the co-founder of the product claims this supposedly “altruistic” approach: “What motivates us is to see how we can help people who are suffering, who have serious illnesses, thanks to these cannabinoid molecules “.
Prohibit or not
Still, the founders of this “hemp vaporizer” are expected at the turn by the Directorate General of Health. It should be attentive to the legality of this marketing (it will be sold on the Internet), while France prohibits the consumption of cannabis.
Another question also arises: should we ban the KanaVape or not? The debate is launched between the supporters of such a product and the detractors like the addictologists who fear that it will encourage adolescents to try.
Asked about RTL, Minister of Health Marisol Touraine has already announced her wish to ban the product: “I am opposed to such a product being able to be marketed in France,” she said. .
