The battery in your smartphone is glued together very well, this will soon change. Read here why.
The European Parliament is going to ban gluing. Why the hell I hear you ask. Well, that’s actually quite logical. Now it is almost impossible to replace a battery. So that has to change. The majority of the European Parliament agrees. The proposal received 567 votes in favour, 67 against and 40 members did not vote.
Battery glued to your smartphone
The aim is to improve the recycling of batteries and thereby make Europe less dependent on other countries for raw materials. That is all the more important now in these weird times of wars and sanctions. In addition, batteries play an important role in the energy transition and it is important to support Right to Repair, say MEPs.
The new measures should come into effect in 2024. Consultation with all Member States must first be held, so that will take some time. Gluing is then no longer allowed. Samsung in particular does this with smartphones. It is unknown whether, for example, Apple will also have to deal with regulations. This company screws the housing closed with non-standard screws. They do this under the heading of ‘easy and safe’.
Not just smartphones
Other products also come under the lines fall. For example, think of electric scooters and bicycles. In addition, manufacturers must also map out the supply chain. This is to map out the risks. This is good because batteries often have raw materials that regularly come from countries where there are conflicts.
