To fight against the risks of contamination by hepatitis C or HIV within the prison population, a draft decree provides for the provision of clean syringes for drug addicted prisoners.
This project, which was presented to the unions of prison staff on Wednesday, provides for the possibility of “for certain prisoners, under certain conditions”, to use the syringes provided in detention in their own cell.
Syringes that could turn into weapons
“One more threat”, say the supervisors intervening on RTL, because these syringes can constitute formidable weapons. For them, there is no question that syringes are used without the supervision of a doctor.
In 2013, a study by the National Institute for Public Health Surveillance and the General Directorate of Health showed that the prevalence of HIV and the hepatitis C virus was six times higher in prisons than in the general population.
