Don’t eat more salt
With high temperatures you sweat more and that is why it is important to drink more water. This way you prevent dehydration. But what exactly is sufficient and what should you pay attention to?
1. Drink before you get thirsty
Make sure you drink enough, even if you are not thirsty yet. For example, have a glass of water every hour. You are drinking too little if you urinate less than usual or if the urine is dark in color. In addition, you perspire more than usual due to the heat. An adult usually needs about 1.5 to 2 liters of fluid per day from drinks. In hot weather it is good to drink at least 2 liters of water and even more if your urine is not light in color or if you urinate less than 4 times a day.
2. Choose low-calorie and non-alcoholic drinks
For example, it is not smart to drink a lot of cola, orange or cassis to keep your fluids up. There are many calories in such sugary soft drinks. So opt for water, tea, coffee or diet soft drinks. Water is the cheapest and the best solution: 0 calories and it comes straight from the tap. Contrary to popular belief, coffee is not a diuretic. Alcohol, on the other hand, does. It is therefore wise to drink little or no alcohol on a hot day. This will prevent you from drying out.
3. Make sure you always have water with you
Fill a bottle of water at home and take it with you when you go out. So you always have water with you on the go. Suppose you get stuck in a traffic jam or the bus and train don’t come, then at least you have something to drink with you.
4. Stop eating salt
Even if you sweat more than usual, there is no need to take extra salt. There is already more than enough salt in our daily food.
