During a joint interview with fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld for Release, the singer Stromae confided in his state of health. He said he had a relapse and was still plagued by side effects from a malaria treatment, Lariam.
It was during his tour of Africa in 2015 that Stromae, Paul van Haver of his real name, took the treatment. He can’t stand it, has to be hospitalized and ends up being urgently repatriated to Europe and has to shorten his tour.
“I’m losing my mind completely”
The artist, who thought he was cured, admits that, recently, the disease caught up with him. “To be honest, I was hospitalized, so I’m still on treatment a bit, and that’s why I’m waking up late. I had a reaction to Lariam, an antimalarial, super super serious. J I had a psychic decompensation. I’m completely losing my mind. It’s really not great. I had a relapse not long ago so I don’t impose complicated schedules on myself”, confides- he to the journalist of Liberation and Karl Lagerfeld.
The designer asks him what the symptoms consist of. “It spins a lot in the head, and we have big anxiety attacks”, answers the singer. He also talks about his daily life: “Apart from that, I’m pretty easy going. I make music in the evening, at night. I don’t like being disturbed on the phone”.
As for his musical career, Stromae explains that he “continues to make music” but is “a bit at a standstill”. He focuses on Mosaert, the ready-to-wear brand he co-founded with his wife, Coralie.
