Anyone who has a pet may recognize it – the vet recommends a serious procedure. For example, your dog needs an MRI scan, during which he needs to be put under anesthesia. Or your cat needs chemotherapy because of a tumor. Of course you would do anything for your sweet pet, but isn’t this going too far? Are we not shifting too much towards ‘people care’ for animals? Respond to this statement.
Agree: Nothing is too crazy, for my pet
Of course you have every treatment performed on your pet. The vet recommends it, so it would be crazy not to rely on that. A pet is a beloved family member. The alternative would be that your animal dies or has complaints, you don’t want that either. If your pet is still happy and enjoys the attention, it’s best to get him treated as well as possible. That is also your responsibility as owner. The costs are quite high, but you can take out insurance for that.
Disagree: Pets need basic care
A bite wound, broken leg or an infection you simply want to have treated at the vet. But treatments for heart disease or cancer for a pet? The question is whether those heavy treatments make the pet happier and healthier. You make different demands on life for yourself as a person, you have different expectations. You don’t want to project it onto your pet. Veterinarian Hugo van Duijn writes: a pet must be able to eat, drink, be happy and be suitable as a pet (sensual and not aggressive). Some vets will go a little further with heavy treatments than others. It is therefore good to be critical of the proposed treatments yourself. And sometimes to say: no, this is going too far.
