Presented at CES 2020 in Las Vegas, this watch called “ScanWatch” is capable of making a medical diagnosis by analyzing data related to breathing during the night, heart rate or sports activity.
If many manufacturers, from Apple to Samsung, have been interested for years connected watches and bracelets to enlighten us on the steps we take during the day, the calories we expend or our heart rate, the new watch from the Withings brand could well revolutionize our relationship to health a little more.
Presented at CES 2020 in Las Vegas and named “ScanWatch”, it is, according to its manufacturer, unique in its kind for the multitude of measurements related to the health of users that it is capable of giving, but also for the precision of those -this.
Thus, while the Apple Watch is able to perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) and thus detect potential atrial fibrillation, the ScanWatch can not only establish a complete cardiac assessment, but also collect and analyze data on sports activity and especially detecting sleep apnea through sleep analysis during the night.
Available by summer
Sleep apnea is characterized by involuntary interruptions in breathing during sleep and is usually caused by an airway obstruction in the back of the throat. Can last more than 10 seconds, and reach up to 30 seconds, these respiratory arrests can also be repeated more than 30 times per hour of sleep.
These breathing pauses cause a lack of oxygen leading to a short awakening, which not only causes poor quality sleep, but can also increase the risk of developing certain pathologies such as high blood pressure (HTA), type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke (stroke).
Sleep apnea is also associated with certain conditions, such as obesity or metabolic syndrome. The ScanWatch can therefore prove to be a valuable tool for diagnosing it. “When waking up, the user benefits from a complete assessment that he can find in the Health Mate application: number of apneic episodes, oxygen saturation, heart rate during the night, number of cardiac events. ScanWatch is the only sleep apnea monitoring tool on the market today that is both medical grade and non-invasive,” says Withings.
For now, however, people with sleep apnea will have to settle for having their disorder diagnosed at a sleep center since the ScanWatch is not yet approved as a medical device.
It will be marketed in France before summer 2020 at €250 in the 38mm version and €300 in the 42mm format.
