Poisoning after detox cure, it seems contradictory but it can happen. A 47-year-old Briton had the painful experience after having abused the detox diet to the point of ending up in hospital. Welcomed at Milton Keynes University Hospital in North London, the woman suffered from various symptoms such as convulsions, malaise, grinding of teeth as well as great mental confusion. The diagnosis concluded with an overdose for having ingested in excess of liters of water, infusions, broth. The Briton has also admitted to being a heavy consumer of medicinal and depurative plants that promote waste disposal and toxins of the organism: green tea, sage, milk thistle, valerian root. Visibly a little too much appetite.
From there to getting sick? Doctors believe the patient may have experienced her symptoms after hyponatremia, a severe sodium deficiency in the blood. This could itself have been due to overconsumption of water.
Desecrate detox
The story of this Briton, recounted in BMJ magazine, should lead all detox enthusiasts to relativize the virtues of these detoxifications of the body. Detox can also have undesirable effects.
