The finding is severe: 54% of young people aged 18 to 35 say they systematically use a condom during their sexual relations. Many people are unaware of the existence of certain STDs, and their modes of transmission.
One in two young people do not know crabs
Only 56% of 18-24 year olds know about crabs, otherwise known as pubic lice. Barely more (63%) know syphilis, while 4,000 to 5,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in France, when it was believed to have disappeared. Only AIDS is on everyone’s mind (96%) and, to a lesser extent, genital herpes (76%). This is the result of a survey carried out by the Harris Institute, for the first national day of information and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, organized by the union of dermatologists-venerologists (SNDV).
It takes just one unprotected intercourse to catch an STD
The purpose of this day is to inform young people, and the less young, of the risks they take during unprotected sex. But beyond the use of condoms, strongly recommended, venereologists try to understand that STDs can also be contracted other than during a classic coitus! However, a quarter of the young people questioned think that there are no risks during anal intercourse. The risks of contamination during genito-oral sex are also underestimated.
