Doctors warn: Strangulation of the penis is common in people with mental disorders and must be taken care of.
- In France, it is estimated that nearly one person in five has suffered or will suffer from depression during their lifetime.
- Depression is a disease that affects all ages.
While a man arrived at the hospital after staying two months with the penis stuck in a bottle, the doctors warn of this possible symptom of depression or other mental illnesses.
The International Journal of Surgery Case Reports reports the case of a 45-year-old man who, after spending eight weeks with his penis stuck in a bottle without telling his relatives, finally presented to the emergency room with edema and growths on his penis. He suffered from severe depression, had already made suicide attempts and had to be operated on.
A surgical emergency
“Penile strangulation, common in people with mental health conditions, should be considered a surgical emergency as it can lead to devastating complications”write the doctors who treated him.“In general, patients in this situation do not want to see a doctor because they are too ashamed”, they add.
The strangulation of the penis is also regularly used by men who seek to increase their sexual pleasure.
