Seniors want to be trained to know first aid and be able to take care of their loved ones and to avoid the sometimes dramatic consequences of a domestic accident, in particular falls. This is why the World First Aid Day on Saturday 12 September will have as its theme “the well-being and autonomy of seniors”.
The results of this survey show that the majority of seniors (66%) believe that training to avoid everyday accidents and to be trained in first aid actions would be useful to them. The majority of people questioned who were sensitive to this type of training have already been confronted with domestic accidents (68%), either personally (67%) or those of a loved one (77%).
More than half (59%) of seniors say that learning first aid skills would allow them to take care of their loved ones.
“Every year, everyday accidents are responsible for the death of 20,000 people in France, nearly half of whom are elderly. A figure that could be reduced by learning the right reflexes and simple gestures, ”recalls the Red Cross in a press release.
Training dedicated to over 60s
Aging and loss of autonomy is a major public health issue, which is why the Red Cross has developed a new course, “Well-being and Autonomy”. It has been adapted to “make people over sixty aware of preventive measures that are easy to implement to avoid domestic accidents for themselves and their loved ones, to learn first aid skills and to overall well-being ( sleep, diet, physical activities, memory and social connection) ”explains the organization in a press release.
