Mentholated or vanilla flavored cigarettes, liquids for electronic cigarettes with sweet scents or tangy: these aromas make it easier for young people to smoke. “They smoke earlier and become addicted more quickly because this little sweet taste similar to that of a candy gives the young people the feeling that these cigarettes are less aggressive than the others” alerted some time ago the Food and drug administration the United States.
To try to put a stop to this premature addiction to tobacco, the city of San-Francisco, in the United States has just banned the sale of tobacco and flavored electronic cigarette liquids. This decision will take effect on January 1, 2018. This West Coast city thus becomes the first American city to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes.
Menthol cigarettes more dangerous
The Georgetown University researchers in the United States discovered that the menthol flavor added to cigarettes acts as a “counter-irritant” by desensitizing nicotinic receptors in the airways. Smokers, less irritated by nicotine, inhale the smoke for longer and more strongly, which makes them even more dangerous to health than conventional cigarettes.
