During pregnancy, women should consume salmon regularly, according to the results of a study presented at the Experimental Biology congress. This diet would reduce the risk ofallergies respiratory systems for babies, in particular, asthma. At the rate of twice a week during the 9 months of pregnancy, the salmon would decrease the probability of being asthmatic for the unborn child.
Researchers at the University of Southampton in the UK carried out a study during the pregnancy of 123 pregnant women to understand the links between salmon consumption and the risk of allergies in unborn children. They monitored and analyzed the medical data of all the children of the participants. The results were compared to a control group of women who did not consume salmon during their pregnancy.
“The first results showed that at six months there was no difference in the rate ofallergy between the two groups of children. However, at the age of two and a half, children whose mothers ate salmon during the pregnancy were less likely to have asthma, ”says Professor Philip Calder.
The reason, the presence of fatty acids in salmon which are involved in a wide range of diseases ranging from various allergies, inflammatory diseases such as Crohn’s disease.
Fish to protect the child’s brain
The results of this study confirm the conclusions of a study by neuroscientists from Tohoku Medical University (Miyagi, Japan), published in the scientific journal Stem Cells on the benefits of fish during pregnancy.
