A French start-up has developed a connected mount capable of spotting the first signs of falling asleep and warning motorists.
One in three fatal accidents on French roads is linked to fatigue, which makes falling asleep the leading cause of road mortality. Fighting drowsiness is therefore a major stake. And to save hundreds of motorists, a French start-up, Ellcie-Healthy, has developed an astonishing object: connected glasses capable of detecting the driver’s hypovigilance. These revolutionary frames should be marketed by Optic 2000 stores from 1er January 2018.
To develop them, the start-up has surrounded itself with scientists, including Prof. Dominique Brémond-Gignac, head of the ophthalmology department at Necker hospital (Paris). The specialist studied in detail the behavior of sleepy volunteers. “This study of falling asleep is important, since it allowed us to identify the parameters that could be detected by the glasses,” she explains to Why actor.
Real eyeglasses
Equipped with micro-sensors, the frame identifies, for example, micro-drops of the head or rapid blinking of the eyelids. And once these warning signs of falling asleep have been identified, a signal is sent to the driver to wake him up. “Of course, the idea is not for the driver to climb over the ceiling and swerve. It can be light stimulus, without dazzling it, or vibrations at the level of the branches ”, describes the ophthalmologist. The mount could also ring the motorist’s smartphone to warn him.
Another advantage is that they are real eyeglasses. “They adapt like conventional glasses to all corrections”, indicates Professor Brémond, adding: “One could imagine that it is a frame that you leave in your car. “
The start-up from Nice also imagines that these frames could also be useful for seniors who are dizzy in order to anticipate falls.
