Organize your new life
For some women, the before and after are not that different. But for others, it is a real upheaval. They don’t see existence the same way at all. Whether at work or at home, they want things to change. They want to get straight to the point and no longer complicate their lives. They say to themselves: “From now on, I will do what is close to my heart”. People around them sometimes have a little difficulty adapting to these changes. But each will gradually find its place.
If for you, the end of treatment coincides with the return to work, you may need to allow yourself periods of rest so as not to tire yourself too much. And continue, if necessary, to ask for a little help from friends, neighbors and family from time to time.
How not to think about the recurrence?
You want to be optimistic. But it’s not always easy. Sometimes you can’t help but think, “What if I wasn’t really healed?” It is normal that these ideas come to mind regularly. Who wouldn’t be worried every now and then after what you’ve been through? If, however, you feel that it occupies your thoughts to the point of ruining your life, do not hesitate to talk to your doctor, a friend, a psychologist or even other women who have already been there. Each of them will certainly be able to help you in their own way.
Could I have a child?
You were planning to have a child soon. But with the disease, you fear that you will have to give up motherhood. The decision is indeed difficult to take and it will take several years. To be even more sure that all is well. Talk to your oncologist because each case is specific.
Can I take the pill?
No, you will have to change your method of contraception because you will no longer be able to take any pills. Discuss with your doctor what is right for you now, perhaps an IUD or condoms.
Can I take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause?
This treatment is contraindicated. Even if the specialists do not all agree on this point.
Will I get back to my usual weight?
You have gained several pounds since the start of your illness. You are not the only one, because treatment and stress often make you fat. You may also have had a less active life in recent months. Resuming your usual activities, your work and a more regular diet (nausea that you calmed with a small snack, it’s over) will help you lose weight. But don’t be too demanding of yourself. Give yourself time.
Can I play sports?
It is even recommended! To get back in shape, to lose weight and for morale. Sport is a natural antidepressant. Thanks to the action of endorphins, hormones that your body produces during exercise, you will feel more peaceful after a bike ride, a swimming session or a gym class. However, you should avoid sports which will put too much strain on your shoulder and your arm on the side of the treated breast.
