Hamilton takes the win with a great catch-up race
Max Verstappen started at the front yesterday, but was unable to keep his lead in the sprint race. Valtteri Bottas won to take pole position. Verstappen starts next to him on the front row. Lewis Hamilton was put all the way back in the sprint race by a penalty, but managed to work his way up to fifth place. Due to another grid penalty he receives for an engine change, he will start from P10 today.
At the start, Verstappen is better off than Bottas. He immediately takes the lead in the first corners. Then Pérez immediately manages to pass the Finn for P2. Hamilton has a great start and is already in third place after five laps.
Soon after, a safety car comes onto the track as Yuki Tsunoda’s front wing is next to the first corner. When the safety car dives back in, Verstappen and Pérez defend well against the Mercedes. After that, a virtual safety car comes immediately, because Schumacher breaks his front wing.
When the race resumes, Pérez must defend tooth and nail against Hamilton. Lewis manages to pass him briefly on lap 18, but Pérez manages to take P2 back. A lap later Hamilton manages to stay ahead of the Mexican. Verstappen then has a four-second lead over his biggest rival in the championship.
After 27 laps Hamilton comes in for new hard tires. A lap later, Verstappen does the same. The Dutchman just manages to keep his lead when he comes out of the pit lane. He then has a lead of just over one second that remains the same for the laps that follow.
Fourteen laps later, Verstappen comes in again for a new set of tires with which he hopes to finish the race. Three laps later, Hamilton comes in again to do the same. Verstappen then has a lead of just under three seconds.
Lewis is quickly approaching again and on lap 48 he can try to overtake. Verstappen is on the inside and brakes very deeply, causing both drivers to go off the track, but without debris or a penalty. In the following laps Hamilton remains in the wake of the Red Bull. On lap 59 Hamilton is really too fast and he passes Verstappen to take the lead.
Verstappen can no longer keep up with the pace in the final. Lewis Hamilton wins the race and overtakes Verstappen in the championship, who has to settle for second place. Bottas wins the fight with Pérez and takes the last podium spot.
