In case of recurring problems in your couple, follow a therapy for two to avoid depression! This is essentially the conclusion of a team of researchers from the University of Michigan (United States) who followed 5,000 Americans, in couple or single, for 10 years to assess their risk of depression. The results of this major survey have just been published in the scientific journal Plos One.
The researchers found that couple relationships were the most likely to be a risk factor for depression: a person in a relationship would have a one in seven chance of experiencing depression compared to a single person in fifteen. Moreover, living happily as a couple makes it possible to be less prone to depression than singlehood.
The study thus suggests that couples in difficulty should undergo marital therapy to preserve their union… and their mental health.
