We may boast about the anti-inflammatory properties of red wine, but its effect is not beneficial for everyone. Researchers at the University of Louisiana recommend that all patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) avoid any consumption of red wine. According to a study published in theAmerican Journal of Pathology, resveratrol, a molecule contained in this drink, accelerates the destruction of myelin, responsible for the proper functioning of nerve reactions, and increases inflammation in the brain. Results : the symptoms of the diseasenamely, chronic fatigue and a set of motor, sensory, vision, neurological and genito-urinary disorders, are multiplied.
American experts have only conducted research on mice, but the lead author of this study, Ikuo Tsunoda, emphasizes the importance of this finding: “Resveratrol may have adverse effects in certain disease states and should not not be consumed by MS patients pending further research.”
The mice were fed resveratrol for a few days to 2 months. The first symptoms like paralysis of the tail and hind limbs soon appeared and peaked at three weeks. After five weeks of treatment, the mice that no longer received resveratrol managed to get back on their feet, but beyond this period, the effects are too great and remission becomes impossible. The researchers explain this reaction by the vasodilating effect of resveratrol, which promotes the absorption of inflammatory cells by the central nervous system.
