A woman who drank 28 cans of Red Bull daily lost her sight after developing high blood pressure.
Red Bull does not always give off wings, as its slogan suggests… On the other hand, the famous energy drink can cause many health problems, especially in those who consume large amounts of it.
150 sugar cubes per day
the Daily Mail tells the story of an Irish mother who developed an addiction to Red Bull over the years. His diet, consisting mainly of about 30 cans a day – or about seven liters – produced an unexpected side effect: loss of sight.
For five years, she tells the British newspaper, this obese young woman ignored the violent headaches associated with her consumption. She refused to consult doctors, until the day she developed a form of blindness.
During examinations, practitioners found that this visual loss was due to idiopathic intracranial hypertension, caused by his obesity and related to the astronomical amount of sugar ingested daily – the equivalent of about 150 sugar cubes.
Multiple side effects
This disease is characterized by an increase in intracranial pressure. It can cause compression of the veins of the retina and papillary edema with a risk of progression to optic atrophy, especially if it is not treated in time. People who are obese or overweight are at greater risk of contracting it.
Although this fact is marginal – people who consume 28 cans a day are, fortunately, rare – it nevertheless serves to bring back concerns about “energy drinks” and their side effects. Even moderate consumption does not seem to be without risk, due to the presence of taurine and caffeine, two substances that can cause cardiovascular problems. These drinks are also suspected of inducing addictive behaviors when mixed with alcohol.
