STUDY – Premature ejaculation, the most common sexual disorder in men, is a source of suffering and frustration for both members of the couple.
A little too much haste, and it’s the stampede. Premature ejaculation is a man’s nightmare and a source of great frustration for couples. A new survey of 575 men with this sexual disorder (and 290 partners) reviews in detail the profile of early ejaculators and the impact on their personal and sexual life.
This work, carried out by the Meranini laboratories in partnership with the FF3S (French Federation of Sexology and Sexual Health), was carried out with men who came to consult for the first time for premature ejaculation, between October 2013 and April 2014.
Anxiety, complexes, divorces
On average, these men were 39 years old and most (70%) were living with a partner. “Compared to the general population, these patients suffered more frequently from mood disorders such as anxiety or depression (37% of patients versus 11% in the general population) and sleep disorders (26% versus 12% ) ”, Note the authors.
If premature ejaculation is happy to joke, it is however not funny for the men who are victims of it and who live it as a failure (for one in two participants), with important repercussions on their confidence in them. “More than half of these patients felt worried about the future of their sexual relationship,” said the survey.
Within the couple, the impact is confirmed. This sexual disorder seems to have been responsible for divorces or separations (22%), arguments or disagreements (57%) but also a desire for infidelity (30%), we still learn from this work.
A disorder, not a disease
Because of the mocking look at this phenomenon, and because society values performance and hypersexuality, these men rarely dare to mention their disorder. Thus, 67% of the participants say they have not consulted during all these years, in the hope that it “will sort itself out”.
However, premature ejaculation is not inevitable. In reality, it is not even a disease, unlike erectile dysfunction, for example, which more frequently refers to a pathology. While some lesions can be the cause of premature ejaculation, most cases are behavioral. Exercises (stop and go, squeeze) thus make it possible to increase the duration of intercourse.
About 30% of men are affected by this disorder – but this figure could well be overestimated. In fact, rushed intercourse should not be confused with truly premature ejaculation, which refers to intercourse for less than a minute from the time of first penetration.
