This is an extremely rare case. In China, a woman with uterine didelph successfully gave birth to twins. This genital malformation can manifest itself in different forms: two uteruses, two cervixes and two vaginas, or a single vagina connected to the two cervixes and two uteruses. However, very few women manage to give birth to twins. But Ms. Li, the Chinese mother, gave birth to twins – a boy and a girl – by cesarean section. According to the People’s Hospital of Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, this case is “one in a million“, in comments published on Weibo, the Chinese social network, and reported by CNN : “It is extremely rare for twins to be conceived naturally in each cavity of the uterus, and even rarer for them to be carried to term“.
Uterine didelphia: a surgical treatment consisting of “uniting the two uteruses externally”
According to Bernabeu Institutespecialized in researching and providing solutions to fertility problems, the bicornuate uterus – another name for uterine didelph – has a prevalence of 0.4% in the general population. This percentage increases by 1.1% among infertile women, 2.1% among patients who have undergone an abortion and 4.7% among those infertile with an abortion. “The bicornuate uterus usually does not require any treatment, can we read on the Instituto Bernabeu website. However, there is a surgical treatment, called Strassman metroplasty, which consists of externally uniting the two uteruses, then making an incision in the wall to join the endometrial cavities.”
Bicornuate uterus: patients’ pregnancies are closely monitored
The Chinese mother had already suffered a miscarriage during a previous pregnancy. So, when she became pregnant in January 2024, she was immediately closely monitored by the medical team. For now, thehe twins’ first names have not been communicated but we know their weight at birth: 3.2 kilograms (kg) for the boy and 2.2 kg for the girl.
