The Porsche Mission R concept car at the 2021 Munich Motor Show could herald a future electric 718 Cayman. Discover in pictures what the small sports coupe “zero emission” could look like.
During the presentation of its Mission R electric racing car concept last September, Porsche did not fail to point out that its proportions were close to those of a 718 Cayman. Since then, the manufacturer has insisted on the functional advancement of the concept and the influence it will have on future production Porsches, while corridor noises evoking “zero emission” replacements for the current 718s have been going well for a few years.. If we rough up the Mission R concept by removing its most aggressive aerodynamic appendages, replacing its “small” competition wheels with more generous rims, and increasing its ground clearance somewhat, we imagine what a future 718 Cayman battery-powered might look like.
What would remain of the concept?
On either side of a short front hood culminating lower than the fenders in the purest Porsche tradition, we could find resolutely modern lights reminiscent of those of the Taycan, with their four LED lines as a light signature of each side. Large air intakes at the front and on the sides could be taken from the concept, to cool the brakes and the mechanics. The Mission R concept battery has oil cooling and, at a time when sports car manufacturers are looking for ways to combat the rapid deterioration in the performance of electric cars under intensive use, such a device should not be ruled out for a production model.

How much power for an electric 718?
If there was an electric 718, this could be based on a specially modified version of the PPE modular platform co-developed by Porsche and Audi with battery under the floor, main motor at the rear and additional motor at the front for most efficient vehicles. This installation would give the Boxster and Cayman all-wheel drive for the first time. On the power side, if the concept’s 680 to 1,088 horsepower (race or qualification adjustment) should be revised downwards for a production model, a cavalry of at least 400 hp would seem essential to offer better performance than the current 718 despite being overweight due to the battery. The details about a possible electric Porsche 718 should be delayed a bit, the presentation of the next generation is not expected before 2023.
