Hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism… All these accidents are called “cardiovascular events”. Recently, the reinforced system for monitoring vaccines against Covid-19, Epi-Phare conducted a large pharmacoepidemiology study to Understand whether people aged 75 and over vaccinated with Pfizer took an additional risk than those who did not receive a vaccine. ANSM publishes the results of the study in a press release.
Since the end of December 2020, the start date of vaccination, people aged 75 and over (the first to have been vaccinated) have been vaccinated mainly with Pfizer. We know, thanks to various studies, that vaccination reduces the risk of developing a serious form of Covid-19 in these populations by 87%. But there was concern about seeing the development of vascular over-risks.
Reassuring results
However, by reporting all the data from the database of the national health data system (SNDS) and the vaccination information base, taking into account all the cases of hospitalizations reported in France for one of the cardiovascular events mentioned above, between December 15 and March 20 in these populations, scientists realized that this was not the case. The figures “do not differ significantly”, notes the ANSM, which studied the cases of more than 30,000 people.
Other studies, about other vaccines against Covid-19 and on other slices of the vaccinated population (with unvaccinated control groups) will follow, in order to assess the risks.
