People whose parents have lived a long time are less likely to get cancer and heart problems at age 60-70, according to a large study.
How will you age? If no one can read the future, genetics nevertheless provide some clues. Indeed, the life expectancy of parents has a direct impact on that of children, according to a large study published in the journal Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Thus, the longer the parents live, the less their offspring seems to be exposed to cancer and cardiac disorders at the age of 60-70 years.
– 20% every 10 years
To reach this conclusion, the authors reviewed data from 186,000 people aged 55 to 73 over eight years. A few months ago, this same team of scientists published in the journal Aging a study showing that people whose parents have lived a long time are more likely to carry genes that protect against many diseases (including hypertension, obesity and type 1 diabetes).
This time around, the researchers show that the spectrum of illnesses that these people could escape would in fact be broader. According to their observations, adults whose parents have had a long life have a greatly reduced risk of contracting cardiovascular pathologies (cardiac disorders, heart attack, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, atrial fibrillation).
In detail, the authors observed that each decade lived beyond the age of 70 by parents resulted, for their children, in a 20% reduction in the risk of mortality linked to these diseases.
Regarding cancers, the study also highlights this type of link. Each decade experienced by parents after 70 is associated with a 7% decrease in cancer risk for their offspring.
“These results remain relevant after taking into account a very large number of confounding factors, such as smoking, alcoholism, sedentary lifestyle or even obesity”, specify the authors.
