Fifteen minutes after being vaccinated against the papillomavirus, a school student from Nantes felt unwell this Thursday, October 19. “This vagal discomfort caused this student to fall heavily”, according to a press release from the Pays de la Loire Regional Health Agency. Friday, the 5th grade student was still hospitalized at the Nantes University Hospital.
Free vaccination against papillomavirus for all 5th graders
Since October 2023, free and non-compulsory vaccination against papillomaviruses has been generalized for all 5th grade students. According to the Ministry of Healththis vaccine “prevents up to 90% of HPV infections, often non-symptomatic but causing precancerous lesions and/or cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina and anus.”
Since 2020, the High health authority (HAS) recommends vaccination against papillomaviruses for all boys and girls aged 11 to 14, with catch-up possible up to 19 years of age.

Discomfort after the papillomavirus vaccine, a side effect to watch out for
In a tweet published this Tuesday, October 17, the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) indicated “deploy[yer] its enhanced monitoring system for adverse effects”.
For its part, the ARS of Pays de la Loire reassures: “vagal discomfort around vaccination can occur due to the stress caused by vaccination but is unrelated to the vaccine product or to a quality defect in the vaccine.”
The vaccination campaign should resume at the start of the school year, on Monday November 6, in Loire-Atlantique colleges.
