The smartphone manufacturer OPPO has found a way to place a camera under the screen in a nice and good way.
For a long time there was only one smartphone that also had a camera under the screen. This is the ZTE Axon 20 5G from last year. Other players such as Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi had also tested this technology. But given the subpar image quality at the time, this did not end up in the smartphones.
OPPO with camera under the screen
OPPO claims it is now (better) works. This would be a step forward in smartphone land. Today, the manufacturer has shown its third-generation camera under the screen to the general public. And based on a sample shot provided, it looks surprisingly promising. As you can see, there is no more noticeable blurriness or glare. But now we have to start from one photo. Practice will soon show whether it really works.
The camera is therefore behind the screen, which means that it can no longer be seen from the outside. This is a nice design feature. OPPO has been doing this for a long time, but the disadvantage is that there were fewer screen pixels over the lens. Because of this, there was not enough light to take really sharp pictures. As a result, the camera was placed in such a way that this was possible, but this made it visible again.
Performance
Nothing has changed in how the camera looks through the screen below the screen. Performance is limited by the amount of light that can travel through the gaps between each OLED pixel. That is why AI compensation is still a must, in order to get that enough light. For the latest camera, OPPO says it has trained its own AI “using tens of thousands of photos” to achieve more precise corrections to diffraction, white balance and HDR. Hence the surprisingly natural-looking sample shot.
