Opel confirms the replacement of Crossland and Insignia by “zero emission” models. The manufacturer’s future range, which will be 100% electric in Europe by 2028, is thus becoming more precise.
At the beginning of July 2021, during the Stellantis EVday event, the group born from the merger of PSA and FCA had notably announced that Opel would become a 100% electric brand in Europe by 2028 and would launch a new Manta “zero mission”. The German manufacturer today gives some details on the first models to be replaced by electric-only versions.

Electric Crossland and Insignia formalized
First named, the Crossland will have a battery-powered model as its direct successor. The urban crossover should be replaced in 2024 by a vehicle internally codenamed OV24. This “cousin” of the future Citroën ë-C3 Aircross (CC24 project) should be about ten centimeters longer than its predecessor in length with around 4.30 m. Opel also confirms that the replacement for the current Insignia, its top-of-the-range sedan, will be 100% electric. It is expected for 2026.


This model will be supported by the Manta mentioned above, about which Opel has just revealed some details. The car is described as ” versatile ” and ” surprisingly spacious » by Uwe Hochgeschurtz, general manager of the brand. This confirms what the first illustration of the model announced, namely that it will be an SUV sharing little with the 1970s coupe from which it will take the name. The sports DNA of the original Manta would however be found according to the leader. ” The new Opel Manta will once again be a very attractive car. The Opel calendar becomes clearer
In addition to the latest official information from Opel, here is what we currently know about the schedule for the brand’s future electric cars.
- 2023: Astra-e Sedan and Astra Break derived from the current model (OV51)
- 2024: Astra-e Cross Tourer derived from current model (OV54)
- 2025: new Grandland (OV64)
- 2025 (summer): Manta produced in Melfi, Italy (OV85)
- 2026: new Insignia
- 2026: new Corsa (OV31)
- 2027: new Mokka (OV34)
- 2028: new Astra

At the change of generation, these Opel will adopt the new STLA modular platforms from Stellantis. From 2025, they will be equipped with batteries produced in Kaiserslautern by the ACC joint venture of Stellantis, TotalEnergies and Mercedes. Opel promises a range of between 500 and 800 km and a remarkable fast charging capacity of 32 km/min “. Opel will be one of the fastest Stellantis brands to abandon the heat engine. All of the group’s manufacturers will be 100% electric by 2030 in Europe.
