Obese people who have unsatisfactory sex lives because of their overweight can expect a great improvement in this regard after bariatric surgery.
According to a new American study of JAMAresorting to bariatric surgery greatly improves the sex life of obese people. Obesity is often associated with a disruption of sex life. 70.7% of people with this condition experience physical difficulty when performing intercourse, for example. In men, erectile dysfunction occurs in 62.5% of cases. “About half of obese patients are dissatisfied with their sex life,” summarize the authors of the research in the preamble.
Five-year follow-up
Between 2006 and 2009, the team recruited 2,036 obese patients who were going to have bariatric surgery, then followed them for five years after the operation. “Sexual functioning and the quality of sex life associated with weight were assessed using questionnaires,” the essay states.
Result: more than half of the women in the cohort with an unsatisfactory sex life before their bariatric surgery saw significant improvements five years after the operation. 41% noted that they had more sexual desire and 35% claimed to have more sexual activity than before. “At least half of the men experienced improvements in these areas during the fifth year” after surgery, the scientists also indicate.
Bariatric surgery has been multiplied by 2.6 in France
The average for OECD countries is 19.5% obese. The United States (38.2%), Mexico (32.4%), New Zealand (30.7%) and Hungary (30%) are the most affected countries, while Japan (3% ), Switzerland (3%), Italy (5%) and Korea (7%) are doing the best. Obesity in France affects 15.8% of men and 15.6% of women. More generally, 1 in 2 French people is overweight, i.e. 56.8% of men and 40% of women.
As a result, the rate of recourse to bariatric surgery was multiplied by 2.6 in France between 2008 and 2014. In 2014, 45,474 patients, including 65.6% suffering from morbid obesity, benefited from surgery bariatric, with a predominance of women operated on at a younger age than men. Bariatric surgery aims to change the way food is absorbed by the digestive system and includes three main operations: gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding.
