Nearly 5 million people worldwide die of strokes each year.
Eating an egg a day does not increase the risk of stroke, according to a new study. “The aim was to investigate the associations between cholesterol-rich egg intake, stroke risk and blood pressure in middle-aged men from eastern Finland. We also wanted to determine whether the APOE4 phenotype could modify these associations”, indicate the researchers in the preamble.
One egg a day
The APOE4 phenotype has a significant impact on cholesterol metabolism. In carriers, the effect of dietary cholesterol on organic cholesterol levels is greater. In Finland, the prevalence of APOE4, which is an inherited variant, is exceptionally high: about a third of the population is a carrier.
The eating habits of 1,950 men aged 42 to 60 were assessed. None suffered from cardiovascular disease. During the 21 years of follow-up, 217 men had a stroke. Those who ate the most eggs (one per day maximum, or 200 mg of cholesterol) were compared to those who ate the least number of eggs. Result: The study found that egg consumption was not associated with the risk of stroke, not even among carriers of APOE4. Previous trials on the subject have yielded conflicting results.
Stroke
A cerebrovascular accident (CVA), also called a “brain attack”, is a sudden loss of function of part of the brain, caused either by a sudden stoppage of blood circulation inside a cerebral artery, or by the rupture of an artery with bleeding in the skull, or the brain.
The severity of the stroke will depend on the location and extent of the brain areas affected. Indeed, each area of the brain is specialized (motricity or sensitivity of the hand, arm, leg, speech, vision, etc.). A localized accident will therefore eliminate a function in part or in whole. This explains why a person can have physical sequelae from a stroke (paralysis of a part of the body or face, reduction or disappearance of vision, speech problems, etc.).
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 5 million people worldwide die of strokes each year and 15 million suffer non-fatal strokes. In France, it is estimated that between 120,000 and 130,000 people are victims each year.
