For the second experiment on the ascent of motorized two and three-wheelers between the lines of cars, a series of signs will be put in place on the axes concerned from the end of 2021.
To go with the new experiment on the ascent of motorized two and three-wheelers between the lines of cars on motorways and expressways, road safety will put in place new signage.
Inter-file lift experienced in 21 departments
The announcement of these panels, published to Official newspaper August 13, comes two weeks after the launch of a second study on this use which allows motorcycles and scooters to continue to move forward when the traffic is dense. These new panels will be installed from the end of 2021, on the axes of the 21 departments concerned by this experiment:
- Al pes-Maritimes;
- Bouches-du-Rhône;
- Drome;
- Gironde;
- Haute-Garonne;
- Herault;
- Isère;
- Loire Atlantique ;
- North;
- Eastern Pyrenees ;
- Rhône;
- Var;
- Vaucluse;
- as well as in the departments of the Ile-de-France region.
Information panels

These signs are purely indicative. They serve above all to inform all users that this practice is in place on the road used. As a reminder, this experiment, launched on August 2, 2021, is only authorized under certain conditions:
- s motorway and expressways with two lanes separated by a central reservation and equipped with at least two traffic lanes on which the maximum authorized speed is greater than or equal to 70 km / h;
- the inter-row ascent is practiced between the two rows furthest to the left;
- the maximum ascent speed must be 50 km / h with a differential of 30 km / h compared to other vehicles;
- tracks under construction, covered with snow or ice are not affected by this experiment;
- inter-row vehicles must not overtake another inter-row vehicle;
- vehicles in inter-line must not force the passage;
- When the traffic becomes more fluid and one of the two lanes furthest to the left is traveling at more than 50 km / h, the motorized two and three-wheelers must resume their place in the way.
An educational and studied experiment

Road Safety is committed to communicating via leaflets or social networks to make all users aware of this practice. In addition, the Cerema (Center for studies and expertise on risks, the environment, mobility and planning) will be ” in charge of evaluating this new experiment and will be attentive to the impact of this new sign on behavior in inter-lane traffic situations ”. Note that during the first experiment, carried out between 2016 and 2021, no panel had been put in place. Finally, remember that inter-line traffic is prohibited outside the experimental areas.
