German researchers have looked at the mortality in type 2 diabetics. It is said to be twice that of people without diabetes.
Thanks to medical advances, the reduction in the death rate of diabetics has been very significant in the last fifty years. However, people with diabetes have a higher risk of death than people without diabetes.
German researchers evaluated the difference in risk between type 2 diabetics and non-diabetics. Mortality of type 2 diabetics is twice as high, according to study published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care.
Risks especially in undiagnosed people
The scientists used data from a national health survey carried out in 1998. They contacted 6,979 participants between 2008 and 2011.
In people aged 45 or over, the risk of death is 1.82 times higher for type 2 diabetics, diagnosed or not, compared to non-diabetics. For undiagnosed people the risk is higher: 1.96 against 1.68 for those diagnosed.
Increased risk in young people
Moreover, this excess mortality is more pronounced and more pronounced in young adults. Likewise, undiagnosed men appear, based on the results of this study, to be at a higher risk of mortality.
For researchers, it is thus necessary to accentuate the prevention of diabetes but also to better support diabetic patients and in particular young people.
In fact, earlier detection and treatment of type 2 diabetes could significantly reduce the risk of complications and mortality.
