More and more women are dying from alcohol. What are the causes of this development?
- More and more women are dying from alcohol.
- This excess mortality is due to the increase in their alcohol consumption and the low resistance of their organism.
- It is therefore essential to put in place targeted public health measures to make women aware of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and to help them protect themselves.
A recent American study published in JAMA analyzed trends in alcohol-related deaths in the United States between 1999 and 2020.
The number of deaths increases every year
The results show a significant increase in mortality rates among women, especially among non-Hispanic white women. According to the study, between 2018 and 2020, the number of deaths by gender increased each year by 12.5% for men and 14.7% for women.
Increased vulnerability to alcohol harm
One of the main reasons for this increase in alcohol-related deaths among women is the increase in their consumption.
Another explanation for the increase in alcohol-related deaths among women is their increased vulnerability to alcohol-related harm. Indeed, women have a lower ability to dilute the alcoholic concentration due to their lower blood volume compared to men. This puts them at higher risk of developing alcohol-related diseases, such as gastritis, poisoning, cardiomyopathy, liver problems and mental illness.

It is therefore essential to put in place targeted public health measures to make women aware of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and to help them protect themselves.
According to data from Alcohol Info Service, at least 500,000 women suffer from alcoholism in France.
As a reminder, Santé Publique France recommends not to drink more than two glasses a day, and not every day.
