Once decided to leave the European market, Mitsubishi backtracked. By 2023, the Japanese manufacturer will offer a new generation Colt. This city car, cousin of the Clio, the illustrator Nikita Chuiko of Kolesa has already imagined it. Here’s what it might look like.
In the segment of city cars, the Colt has always had a very discreet career. It even disappeared from the catalog at the end of 2012, replaced by the Space Star. But the Colt is set to make a comeback starting in 2023. To make us wait until then, the Japanese manufacturer has published a photo teaser. It was enough to tickle the illustrators.
A more futuristic look than the Clio
Nikita Chuiko, of the Kolesa site, was one of the first to draw his vision of the city car, cousin of the Renault Clio. He was also based on the diamond model to draw the features of the future Japanese. However, it is not a copy-paste as caricatural as between the Mazda 2 and the Toyota Yaris. The first photo of the Japanese chip suggests a more futuristic light signature with very thin LED daytime running lights. A large logo will be placed prominently in the center of the grille. The latter will be embellished with X-shaped trim typical of Mitsubishi productions. However, the hood and the front fenders will remain common to the Clio and the Colt.
On the back, the illustrator was less inspired. We find the spirit of the Clio with all its stamped sheet metal, as well as the rear door handles concealed in the uprights. On the other hand, the lights adopt a different, more tapered design. This distinction is quite possible since the rear bumper and the tailgate flap will be specific to the Colt. These parts are made by equipment manufacturers, and this leaves the designers a bit of freedom to affix the brand’s visual identity.
Hybrid or nothing
To survive in the city car segment, Mitsubishi will only decline its city car with a hybrid engine. It will be the same E-Tech block as the one present under the hood of the Clio. The 1.6 l today develops a power of 145 hp. The Colt – which will share its platform (CMF-B) with the Clio – will be produced alongside the French in Bursa, Turkey. This will be the second Mitsubishi vehicle produced by Renault, since the tricolor brand will also be responsible from 2023 for assembling the future ASX, a close relative of the Renault Captur.
