Analgesics are not automatic. A report by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in the UK warns against the overly regular use of these pain relieving drugs. Experts have found that pain relievers can make pain worse instead of reducing it. In their sights, paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen, usually taken to relieve headaches or arthritis are suspected of being the drugs most at risk. According to the report, one in 50 people suffer from headaches from taking too much of these pain relievers.
The watchdog believes that taking pain relievers every other day increases the risk of pain by making the brain more sensitive to pain. This then becomes a vicious circle, since the persistence of the headache leads to taking more painkillers, which makes the headache a little more worse.
“Taking analgesics for more than ten or 15 days in a month can lead to headaches due to drug abuse,” warns Professor Martin Underwood, a researcher at Warwick Medical School, quoted by the Daily Mail.
Headaches: alternatives to analgesics exist
To effectively cure headaches without medication, other more natural solutions are being tested. We breathe in the fresh air, we calm down. You can also try the finger yoga or turn toaromatherapy. Drink 7 glasses of water per day would also relieve pain, according to Dutch researchers.
