Bronchodilators are medications for breathing problems.
In normal breathing, air travels through the nose and windpipe into narrowing airways called the bronchi. In some cases, the smooth muscles around the bronchi contract, creating more mucus. This makes breathing difficult.
Generally, this condition is treated with medications called bronchodilators. The most common types of bronchodilators are anticholinergics and beta-2 agonists. These drugs are inhaled and pass through the airways to the bronchi, where they bind to smooth muscle cells. This relaxes the muscles and reduces the production of mucus, making breathing easier.
