That’s it, the game is over: the sixth-year medical students of the 2017 class have chosen their specialty and the city where they want to spend their internship. The online procedure (organized as every year by the CNG, the national management center) ended on September 19, 2017 after 16 days of opening and the time is now on the balance sheet.
This year, 8,372 students ranked for a city and a specialty, in order of merit – meaning that the highest ranked had the privilege of choosing first. Among the “favorite” specialties, we can cite infectious and tropical diseases, plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, nephrology or even ophthalmology.
Unsurprisingly, students have primarily positioned themselves in university hospital centers (CHUs) in large metropolises such as Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille and Strasbourg.
Geriatrics, psychiatry and general medicine do not attract students
Today, only 277 positions remain vacant. Five specialties in particular were shunned by students: geriatrics (29 out of 200 positions are currently unfilled), general medicine (187 out of 3,132 unoccupied positions), psychiatry, public health and occupational medicine and health (35% of empty places , a sad record).
In Île-de-France, the situation is more serious: only 13 positions offered in medicine and occupational health out of 25 have been allocated and 131 general practitioner places have remained vacant.
