A forensic scientist warns about the dangers of unsafe masturbation in an interview with the German daily Bild. According to him, each year one to two people per million inhabitants of Germany die during this apparently harmless practice. Explanations.
Gone are the days when masturbation was a taboo. Today, health professionals recognize its health benefits. But this little intimate pleasure, seemingly harmless, still hides some dangers when reckless risks are taken to intensify the pleasure. Forensic pathologist Herald Voss warned in German daily Bild, that between 80 and 100 Germans die each year while masturbating, mainly after taking risks.
Cerebral hypoxia, a two-speed pleasure
The most common causes of death during masturbation are electric shock and autoerotic asphyxiation, the latter most often resulting from austrangulation, which causes oxygen deficiency in the brain and is believed to enhance sexual pleasure in some people. . But this cerebral hypoxia, if it intensifies the sexual euphoria of some followers, can be fatal. “If, for example, we block the two carotid arteries (those which leave suddenly and supply oxygen to the brain, editor’s note), loss of consciousness can occur in 30 seconds,” explains the doctor. Damage to the brain can be irreversible, even causing death within minutes.
Men more concerned than women
According to the coroner, these deaths by masturbation concern all ages, but mainly men. The official data remains erroneous, however, in particular because relatives who find one of their own in this situation tend to disguise the scene. The number of deaths occurring during the practice of masturbation could therefore be higher. If everything suggests that a person found naked, dead with a plastic bag over his head in front of his mirror, was masturbating, the authorities can conclude a suicide or a tragic accident without further investigating. This prevents the correct identification of cases in order to carry out prevention.
Masturbation with vacuum cleaner
An American study of urology (a medical field which applies in particular to the urinary tracts of both sexes, the male reproductive system and the adrenal glands) carried out in 1985, set out to discover the prevalence of injuries caused by people masturbating with vacuum cleaners. The conclusion was clear: “Injury from this form of self-stimulation is not unusual. Significant penile trauma presents with serious injury including loss of the glans penis.”
Traumatic scenes for the entourage
In March 2017, the case of a man who died while masturbating was reported in the review Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology. Found by his wife in his living room, dressed in female underwear, decked out with fake breasts and a wig, he had connected the blow to the feet thanks to a metal ring arranged around the neck. He also had a ping pong ball in his mouth and a pen in the anus held in place by thongs. His testicles and penis were concealed in the groin. Doctors conclude in an accidental autoerotic death caused by the strangulation. In the same issue, the case of a 44-year-old woman who used to hang herself to masturbate was also described. His body was found dead, hanging from a banister.
