The waves emitted by mobile phones can cause damage to the brain, heart or kidneys. But they would also have a detrimental effect on the motility, concentration and viability of spermatozoa.
- An electromagnetic wave is a category of waves that can travel in a propagation medium such as vacuum or air, with a speed close to that of light.
- These waves emitted by mobile phones could lead to a reduction in the quality of sperm.
“Phones are ubiquitous these days and experts are constantly debating the pros and cons of this device. But can cell phones affect male fertility?” This is the question posed by scientists from Pusan National University in South Korea. To determine whether exposure to electromagnetic waves emitted by telephones had an impact on the quality of sperm, they carried out work, including the results were published in the journal Environmental Research. For the purposes of the study, the researchers reviewed 435 studies published between 2012 and 2021. They focused on 18 works, which included 4,280 semen samples.
A link between phone use and reduced sperm quality
The verdict is in: “Exposure to mobile phone waves is associated with reduced sperm motility, viability and concentration”. The authors of the study sought to find out whether a longer duration of exposure to the waves emitted by the telephones was linked to a lower quality of the sperm. They found that the decrease in sperm quality was not significantly associated with the duration of exposure, but only with the exposure to cellphone waves itself.
Yun Hak Kim, author of the work and professor at Pusan National University, warned in a statement that “Cell phone users should strive to reduce their use to protect their sperm quality.” “Further studies will be needed to determine the effect of exposure to electromagnetic waves emitted by new models of mobile phones in today’s digital environment”, he concluded.
