An American study confirms the veracity of certain stereotypes. The neural connections would be different according to the sexes, which would explain the differences in aptitudes between men and women.
The brains of men and women work differently! This has just been confirmed by an American study carried out using a scanner. Thus, a whole series of stereotypes conveyed by society would therefore have a scientific explanation. Unpublished results published this Tuesday in the Proceedings of the American Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
This study by the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) School of Medicine involved 949 people, including 521 women and 428 men aged 9 to 22. According to the results, men show greater neuronal connectivity between the front of the brain, the seat of coordination of action, and the back, where the cerebellum, source of intuition, is housed. For Professor Ragini Verma, the main study author, this work explains why men are, on average, better able to learn and perform a single task, such as cycling, skiing or sailing.
Regarding women, the connections would link the right hemisphere, where the capacity for analysis and information processing is located, to the left hemisphere, the center of intuition. Thus, the women would have on their side a superior memory and a greater social intelligence which make them more able to carry out multiple tasks and to find solutions for the group, specifies the researcher.
“These maps of brain connectivity show striking and also complementary differences in the architecture of the human brain, which help provide a potential neural basis for why men excel at certain tasks and women at others,” continues Prof. Ragini Verma.
And, “it is also striking to note how much the brains of the woman and the man are really complementary”, concludes Ruben Gur, Professor of psychology, co-authors of this work.
In the end, this behavioral study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania may well satisfy everyone. The latest findings of these researchers have indeed shown that women are superior to men for attention span, memory of words and faces as well as social intelligence tests. Men, for their part, surpass women in capacity and speed of processing information.
