It is a theory that has its followers in the United States. The reason there are so many cases of Lyme disease today is because ticks were allegedly used as a biological weapon by the Pentagon in the past. An experiment that would have gone wrong.
Each year in the United States, 300,000 to 437,000 new cases of Lyme disease are detected. For some, the government has something to do with this epidemic. Conspiracy theory or state scandal? Some want to find out the truth.
On July 11, the House of Representatives approved the amendment of an elected official from New Jersey, Chris Smith, who wants to know if the United States has experimented with Lyme disease as a biological weapon, with ticks and other insects, between 1950 and 1975. “What were the parameters of the program? Who ordered it? Were infected ticks released intentionally or accidentally and where?” Asked the elected representative before the House of representatives.
Several books published on this subject
This theory does not come out of nowhere. Chris Smith relies in particular on Kris Newby’s book, “Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Desease and Biological Weapons”, published in the spring. In this book the author, a scientist from Stanford University, therefore claims that Lyme disease comes from a military experiment conducted by the United States that went wrong.
The latter is based in particular on interviews with Willy Burgdorfer, the scientist who identified the disease in 1982. Willy Burgdorfer says he personally inoculated insects with diseases transmissible to humans. He also assures that infected ticks were accidentally released in residential areas.
In 2004 another book, titled “Laboratory 257: The Disturbing History of the Secret Government Biological Laboratory on Plum Island” was published, uncovering a similar thesis.
French people also think that we hide things from them
In reality, Lyme disease was not born in the United States but in Europe, where it was described as early as the 19th century. In France also some believe that the authorities are responsible for the disease. However, the increase in its incidence (67,000 cases in 2018 compared to 45,000 in 2017) is due to weather conditions that are more favorable to ticks and better awareness among health professionals. In 2017, Doctor Christian Nobody published a book, “The truth about Lyme disease”.
If Lyme disease is so mysterious, it is because the diagnosis is difficult to establish and is essentially based on symptoms: joint and muscle pain, headaches or even nervous disorders. As a result, some people think they are sick when in fact they are not.
