A new study published in Heart magazine finds that people who are alone or lonely are at greater risk heart attack orstroke than those with strong social connections.
“Loneliness has profound effects on the body” explains Dr Nicole Valtorta, a researcher at the University of York in the UK and lead author of the study.
His team dug into the existing scientific literature and analyzed 23 studies involving 180,000 healthy people. They found that loneliness, a feeling that is sometimes felt when you are unhappy in your relationship, was linked to an increased risk of coronary heart disease (+29%) and stroke (+32%). What makes loneliness an equally important risk factor than diabetes, stress at work Where anxiety.
Less likely to eat well or be physically active
“Isolated or lonely people are less likely to engage in physical activity, eat well, and visit their doctor less often. In addition, we noted that they had a higher rate of obesity” explains Dr. Valtorta.
Fortunately, the reverse also seems to be true: cultivating strong relationships is good for the heart. A happy marriagefor example, is a guarantee of good health that has been recognized by doctors.
