Original by its only electrified engines, the first Niro was much more conservative by its bodywork. A reproach that will be difficult to address to its second generation, as its lines inspired by the Habaniro concept appear much more daring.
Offer a compact SUV without any conventional combustion engine? When Kia launched the Niro in 2016, the game did not seem to be won in advance. But this first generation really does not have to be ashamed of its commercial career, with more than 500,000 copies sold worldwide since its inception. She can therefore consider retiring with peace of mind, while the second version takes advantage of the Seoul Mobility Show, in South Korea, to unveil its lines.
A look inspired by the Habaniro concept

Even if the side glazing and the proportions do not completely turn their backs on the current model, it is impossible to speak of a smooth aesthetic evolution. Inspired by the Habaniro concept of 2019, the body should go much less easily unnoticed than before. Especially with a two-tone livery, the treatment of which is more reminiscent of the old Peugeot “free cut” than the majority of competitors, often simply equipped with a black roof. As on the new Sportage or the EV6 crossover, the design adopts a philosophy called by the brand “opposites united”, or “alliance des opposires” in French. From the front, the “tiger nose” grille is refined and the look is much more original. While at the rear, the lights are now perched high, on either side of a rather small bezel overhung by a spoiler.
The screens take over

The interior is just as unrecognizable as the exterior. What is first obvious are the two juxtaposed screens that sit at the top of the dashboard. Without caps, they can give the impression that they are one. Popularized by the current Mercedes Class A, this layout is also used by the EV6 and the Sportage. As is the trend, the number of buttons is decreasing, while the imposing gear lever gives way to a small dial. But the Niro 2 also strives to honor its self-proclaimed “green SUV” status by carefully choosing its materials. The headliner is thus made from recycled wallpaper. The refined seats, incorporating a hanger behind the headrest, make use of organic polyurethane and Tencel, made from eucalyptus leaves.
Still three types of electrification

Side technical information, on the other hand, Kia remains almost silent. The brand has just agreed to reveal that this second generation will remain available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric, from the second half of 2022. It will therefore not be entitled to the new e-GMP platform of the imposing EV6, more expensive and only designed for 100% electric. Here it is an evolution of the current base that should be used. A “Greenzone” driving mode is also mentioned: it will automatically switch to electric in certain areas, for example near schools or hospitals. It will nevertheless be necessary to wait a few more months to know the characteristics of this Niro 2 more precisely, as well as its range or its prices.
