A study by the Fondation de France reveals that, since 2010, loneliness has affected an additional 1 million people, bringing to 5 million the number of those who have little or no social relations within the five most common networks ( family, professional, friendly, affinity or neighborhood).
The Fondation de France, which has supported the most disadvantaged people for 40 years, wishes to continue its fight and engage in a major project to restore social ties.
An alarming finding
In 2013, nearly one in three French people only had one network. A dangerous situation that does not allow us to bounce back in a moment of crisis. During a divorce, move, death, dismissal, illness, disability … it is often the entire social life that is in danger.
The family in peril
39% of French people do not have a strong link with their family, compared to 33% in 2010. 4 out of 10 French people (37%) have little or no relationship or contact with their neighbors. 1 in 4 French people do not have an active friendly network (friends, affinity).
The middle classes and young people are also affected
Households with € 1,000 to € 3,499 in net monthly income are also affected by loneliness, which is also growing strongly in large cities. 13% of the inhabitants of large metropolises are alone, against 8% in 2010. It is accentuated where social housing is increasing: 14% of the inhabitants of the HLM stock are in a situation of isolation. Loneliness also affects young people. It has doubled in 3 years among those under 40 (6% of them are now alone). For the first time, the phenomenon also affects 18-29 year-olds, hitherto preserved.
