It still happens just before the end of the year: the Netherlands is going into lockdown to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Part of the lockdown is closing all non-essential stores. The question that lives among many people: will liquor stores remain open? The answer to that question is yes. After that relief, people quickly wonder: is the car garage open during lockdown? For this we dive into the ‘overview of excluded retail during lockdown’. We will soon find the answer there.
Update December 19, 2021: We are once again in a lockdown. The measures are more or less the same as last year; we have updated the article for the current measures.
Is the car garage open during lockdown?
Yes, car garages can remain open. The list of the national government contains the point ‘locations for repair and maintenance of consumer goods and (motor) vehicles’. In the same list are gas stations. Refueling is therefore also allowed, as is quickly buying something in the shop next to the pump. By the way, if you want to tinker with your car yourself, you can pick up orders with, for example, tools at hardware stores and other stores.
Corona measures car garages during the lockdown
The BOVAG reports: ‘Workshops may be open according to normal opening hours. A customer of the workshop may wait inside the waiting area. Do keep the general measures such as 1,5 meters away and the mandatory wearing of a mouth cap.’
You can also take a test drive in modified form. The BOVAG says about this: ‘A showroom is closed for sale. An appointment may be made for the customer to pick up the product or the test drive. The customer can collect the car for the test drive or you can deliver the car to the customer for the test drive. The seller is not allowed to get into the car with the customer.’
Will the RDW remain active during lockdown?
The RDW says: ‘The services of the RDW continue, despite the current lockdown. Processes have already been adjusted in the past corona period to ensure progress. We do, however, keep a close eye on developments in order to be able to take measures if necessary.’
If your car goes for the MOT, you can still expect a sample. According to the website, the inspection stations are still open, but only by appointment. Registrations are also possible. The list of exceptions also includes ‘service points for sending or receiving letters and parcels’. You can often also transfer a car here, so that all can continue.
