It is a Swiss patient, who detected “an abnormal odor” which alerted the laboratory which manufactures Rhinatiol, a syrup for children against the cough. Informed by the laboratory of the presence of a toxic substance, phenol, the French Agency for the Safety of Health Products therefore requested that three batches of syrups be withdrawn from sale:
- Rhinathiol expectorant carbocisteïne 2% children and infants without sugar, syrup sweetened with sodium saccharin and liquid maltilol (carbocisteïne)
- Bronkirex sugar-free 2% child and infant, syrup sweetened with saccharin and liquid maltilol (carbocisteïne).
- Carbocisteïne Winthrop 2% children and infants without sugar, syrup sweetened with saccharin and liquid maltilol (carbocisteïne).
Obviously, Afssaps also recommends that you do not use the vials that you have at home and bring them back to the pharmacist.
What if my child took this syrup last night?
In the state of the available data, the concentration of phenol found in certain vials is appreciably lower than the level from which toxic effects, such as irritation, are expected.
In addition, in France, no report linked to the absorption of these drugs has been reported. But it is as a precautionary measure that the laboratory is recalling the batches of syrups.
