A hangover pill is now marketed in the UK. What do we know about its effectiveness? Explanations.
- The pill should be taken several hours before you start drinking alcohol.
- To fight against a hangover, it is necessary to adopt the right gestures, such as drinking water, resting, eating enough and spacing out the drinks.
It seems to be the perfect solution to be able to enjoy alcoholic drinks this summer without fearing a difficult tomorrow. A first anti-hangover pill has been developed by the Swedish laboratory Myrkl. Since the beginning of July, this drug has been sold in the United Kingdom. It can also be purchased online in around ten European countries, including France.
How can a pill promise to dodge the classic inconvenience of the aftermath of a drunken evening? Thanks to probiotics that break down alcohol in the blood. According to the manufacturers, this drug can reduce up to 70% of the alcohol absorbed after 60 minutes, with reduced euphoric effects.
Doubts about its effectiveness
According to some health professionals, its effectiveness remains to be proven. This “miracle pill” has not been approved by the UK Medicines Authority. It is therefore not a drug per se. Second, it does not protect against other adverse effects of alcohol, such as dehydration or hypoglycemia.
Finally, the study sample, which is small, casts doubt on the true effectiveness of this hangover pill, raised hepatologist Ashwin Dhanda, in an article recently published on the site The Conversation. “First, the researchers only reported the results for 14 of the 24 people, because ten of them had lower blood alcohol levels at baseline. Second, the results varied between different people, reducing the accuracy of the study. And third, the researchers tested seven days of treatment before a single drink, but the company recommends taking only two pills one to twelve hours before any drink.”he developed.
