The Kinder surprise and Happy meal toys that make children stomp will soon be a memory for little Chileans. The government has just banned them by adopting very strict food legislation which is necessary for public health.
For good reason, Chile is a society sick with overweight and obesity due to its appetite for junk food. The country is the champion in Latin America in the consumption of sugary drinks, bread and ice cream. Eating habits that harm the population: more than 60% of adults and a third of children under six are Overweight. the diabetes, it explodes as the appetite of Chileans swells for products too rich in fat and sugar.
The ban on toys accompanying the Kinder Surprise as well as that of Mc Donald’s children’s menus is therefore part of the prevention of the risk of overweight children. The government hopes this will distract the attention of young Chileans from unhealthy foods.
More transparent labeling for healthier food choices
The new law took 4 years to be adopted in order to leave it to the agrifood industries to adapt to the new situation. It also provides for more transparency in the labeling of food products by emphasizing more the composition of fats, sugars and sodium. Objective: to enable consumers to choose healthier foods.
In France, four logos providing information on nutritional quality affixed to food products sold in supermarkets will be tested from September. One food labeling which also aims to inform consumers and encourage them to eat more balanced.
