Remember: at the height of the Covid-19 epidemic, Pr. Didier Raoult had proposed a “miracle cure” against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus – hydroxychloroquine. Quickly discouraged by health authorities and then by the World Health Organization (WHO) itself, hydroxychloroquine ended up being forgotten…
Nevertheless: some people (often followers of conspiracy theories…) continue to defend hydroxychloroquine and the work of Pr. Raoult.
A new scientific argument against hydroxychloroquine will perhaps make them change their minds: in a press release published this Wednesday, April 5, 2023, the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) affirms that “children exposed to hydroxychloroquine during their mother’s pregnancy are at higher risk of severe birth defects“.
A greater risk of about 33%
To state this conclusion, the ANSM bases itself on a study published in February 2023 in the journal American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology : this had compared 2000 pregnant women treated with hydroxychloroquine to a control group. Verdict: when the molecule is taken at “high dose“, there is a greater risk (about 33%) of fetal malformation.
“Data published to date in adults continue to show that [l’hydroxychloroquine] has no clinical benefit in the management of this pathology [le Covid-19]” underlines the ANSM. At present, hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil®) is only authorized for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
